Parr’s Natural History Guides

Parr’s Guides introduce the hiker, adventurer, and beginning naturalist to the phenomena and inhabitants of California’s natural landscapes. We hope to provide the step between curiosity and proficiency in the subject, with the satisfaction of putting a name on what you’re looking at. The guide is not  just a matching game for animals and plants, but can establish the groundwork for those who may want to look more closely. We have included some scientific information, hoping that it will create a bridge of understanding when an amateur decides to pick up a more complex source. We hope you find Parr’s Guides useful and user-friendly.

Parr’s Guides are printed on sturdy, folding, laminated cards. They're convenient to use right where you need them—in the brush, tidepool, desert, or forest. A ruler is printed on one edge for quick field measurements.

Parr’s Guides have concise introductions to each ecosystem, and an illustrated example of how to use them. A map shows the best areas for plant and wildlife viewing. Diagrams show life zones, biological habitats, and other vital concepts (such as plant community succession). Species information is keyed back to the map and diagrams.

Parr’s Guides are illustrated with full-color photographs. Succinct descriptions of each animal or plant species note its size, geographical distribution, and distinguishing characteristics. The guides use both common and scientific names.

Parr’s Guides are for students as well as hobbyists and day-trippers. Teachers receive a discount on purchases.

Parr’s Guides have a reference section that tells where you can find more detailed information.

Parr’s Guides have bar codes and ISBN numbers for the convenience of retail sales.

Parr's Guides are written and photographed by Ivan Parr.
